A hard hard very hard couple of days.

My dear daughter has an eating disorder. Today I left her at a treatment facility where she will live for a while and get the help she needs. I am back home without her.

Beginning again is something that ought to be allowed anytime of year, but perhaps there is more power when we all do it together. In celebration of the day, I have begun a new sketchbook, I’ve even made new covers for it. I love doing it for just myself alone, but somehow it is even better if there is someone else who enjoys it too. May the New Year bring us all many blessings and may we bring blessings to each other.

This is the back cover of the book.
And this is the front. Both are collages. The black and white photos are from Captain Scott’s Terra Nova expedition to the South Pole.

Last night there was a party near the river with homemade pizza and thrillingly loud fireworks at the house of dear friends. Along with myself, my daughter and her boyfriend, there was their son Duncan and his posse of longtime companions, all of them in the early twenties who look upon Duncan’s house as being quite their own home too. I asked if anyone wanted to draw something in the last few pages of my journal as I am planning on starting a brand new one on January 1st. Below are the sketches they gifted me:

This is from Seth who will be studying next semester in Spain before going to Law School.
This is from Chris, a far better artist than I.
This is from Max who makes amazing Pizza.
This is from Weston, my daughter’s sweet boyfriend who studies physics.
And this is from Ed, who has been my loyal friend for over 40 years. I too believe in days like this, thank you my dear for the warmth of your home.

Spent the morning and afternoon at Shaker Village yesterday and saw the first Northern Harrier I’d seen in several years wheeling over a field in the late afternoon sun.
